Mr. D. William "Bill" Heltzel

Dale William "Bill" Heltzel, age 82, husband of the late Janet I. (Arbaugh) Heltzel, of Pottstown, PA, formerly Union Bridge, MD passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2020. Born on March 12, 1937 in South Woodbury Township, Bedford County, PA, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Pauline E. (McIlnay) Heltzel. Mr. Heltzel was a graduate of Franklin High School in Bedford County. Following high school, he volunteered for the Brethren Volunteer Service, being assigned to New Windsor, MD, where he would eventually meet his wife. Some of his early jobs included work in the steel mill, pumping gas, milking cows, working in a butcher shop, painting in the summers, and managing a feed mill. Following his time at the feed mill, he would go on to work for, and retire from, the finance department for the Maryland State Police. Mr. Heltzel was a member of the Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren in Union Bridge, MD, and attended the Coventry Church of the Brethren for the past 3 years while living in Pennsylvania. A fixer and handyman, Mr. Heltzel loved repairing things, woodworking, and working around his shop and home. He enjoyed hunting when he was younger, and even recently enjoyed trout fishing in Pennsylvania. He enjoyed card games, among other various games, and found comfort in sewing quilts for the church. Following his retirement, he was involved with several volunteer organizations, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving, SERVV International, and the Carroll County 4H Fair. He enjoyed attending yard sales, auctions, and visiting thrift stores. Mr. Heltzel is survived by two children, Dennis W., husband of Nancy M. Heltzel of Pottstown, PA and Kay Ann, wife of Edward A. Kulp of Pottstown, PA; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, wife of George Frank, Joshua, husband of Sarah Heltzel, Emily Heltzel, Kaitlyn, wife of Michael Skolka, Kelly Kulp, Aaron Kulp, Aimee Kulp, Hannah Kulp, and Mary Kulp; five great-grandchildren, Titus, Caleb, Elianna and Olivia Frank and Adeline Heltzel; two sisters, Carol, wife of John Miller and Betty, wife of Bruce O'Neal; sister-in-law, Phyllis Heltzel; and nineteen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn Heltzel and Joseph, husband of the late Jean Heltzel. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral ceremony at the Coventry Church of the Brethren, South Keim Street and East Cedarville Road, Pottstown, PA on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 7:00 pm. Officiating will be Rev. Mark Muthler. Friends will be received from 5:00 pm - 6:45 pm Thursday evening at the Coventry Church of the Brethren. Maryland visitations will take place on Friday, March 6, 2020 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Hartzler's Funeral Home, New Windsor, MD, and Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren, 26 N. Pipe Creek Road, Union Bridge, MD 21791 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM, with a service taking place at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in the Pipe Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren at the address above, or to the Brethren Disaster Ministries, 601 Main St. P.O.
