J.D.M. Cameron

Dr. J.D.M. "Jack" Cameron, age 83, wife of Sandra C. (Coville) Cameron, of Douglassville, PA, died Saturday, December 27, 2008, after a lengthy illness. Born in Newark, NJ, he was a son of the late John David and Edna (Renninger) Cameron. Jack served in the Navy in WWII beginning in the Navy V-12 program at Cornell University and ending with a tour of duty on the escort carrier Anzio. Jack went back to Cornell after the war to obtain his doctorate in Applied Mechanics, and was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma X and Phi Kappa Phi. He was an Instructor/Assistant Professor of Engineering Mechanics at Cornell before he was recruited by the General Electric Co. for their Guided Missile Department in 1953. At GE he worked on the guidance and control systems for one of the first U.S. ballistic missiles, the Hermes, as well as the fire control system of the Navy's Polaris missile. He also worked on guidance and control systems for maneuvering reentry vehicles for intercontinental ballistic missiles, such as the Atlas, until his retirement. Jack's fascination with numbers is exemplified by his paper "Quick, Simple, Exact Formulas for Fibonacci Numbers and their Companion Sequence" written and sent to friends in 2001. Jack was an avid fan of all Philadelphia teams and loved to garden. He will be missed by family, friends and companies who send him plant catalogues. In addition to his wife of forty-three years, Jack is survived by five children; Tracy W. Riley, of CA, Alyson W. Phillips, of Wayne, PA, Dean C. Cameron, of Levittown, PA, David R., Cameron, of Douglassville, PA, Catherine H., wife of Isaac Sparks, of MD, six grandchildren; Dana Riley, Courtney Phillips, Colby Phillips, Brandon Cameron, Aiden Cameron, and Brynne Lawler. A celebration of Jack's life will be held at his home on January 10, 2009 at 3:00. RSVP 484-336-0440.
