Margaret Anna Madden
March 17, 1926 - October 10, 2019
Margaret (Peggy) Anna Bernadine Madden, née Snedgen, born on March 17, 1926 in Hardington, NE, died October 10, 2019, age 93 at Amity Place, Douglassville, PA. She was a daughter of the late Alfred T. Snedgen and Theresa Hildebrand Snedgen, and a sister of the late Alfred F. Snedgen. Mrs. Madden was married to the late William (Bill) Wayne Madden for 70 years, and is survived by five children, Emmalee Christine Madden-LeCoff, wife of Alan LeCoff of Philadelphia, PA, William Wayne Madden, Jr., husband of Miriam Madden of Townsend, DE, Theodore Barksdale Madden, husband of Sharon Madden of West Berlin, NJ, Randall Stuart Madden, husband of Deborah Madden of Pottstown, PA, and Margaret Therese (Terri) Madden-Sharif of Pottstown, PA; and seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; and many extended family from around the world. Peggy and Bill raised their family in a large country house near St. Peter's Village on Rock Run Road, where they resided for 32 years. In 1978, they moved to Cape May, NJ, where they owned and operated two shore guest houses, "The Dormer House" and the "William and Margaret Cottage". Over the many years, the Maddens housed and care for 58 foster children, exchange students, and refugees, and many friends from Ethiopia, Vietnam, Cuba, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, India, France, Kenya, Nigeria, and Germany - all calling them Mom and Dad, or Maud and Paud, as their children affectionately called them. Since her childhood, she always cared about the injustices committed in the world, and in every way she could, helped to overcome them and alleviate suffering. She truly walked the walk. Her roles were many in the community. Aside from mother to many, she co-founded the local meals on wheels chapter, and led or participated in many fund drives throughout the years from the American Cancer Society to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She was involved in the PTA, was den mother to cub scouts, and was always a passionate and cheering fan at all of her children's sports or theatrical events. Peggy was also an avid gardener, planting colorful and diverse gardens wherever she lived, often picking the weeds in any public garden or planter she walked past. She loved to laugh with her many friends and family, and to hear and tell funny stories. She loved children, animals, natures, crafting, reading, playing games and cards, and foxtrotting or jitterbugging with her husband. Her children are planning a celebration of their parents' compassionate and eclectic lives at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Peggy's name may be made to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation, P.O. Box 781352, Philadelphia, PA 19178. Arrangements are being handled by the Cattermole-Klotzbach Funeral Home, Royersford, PA.
