Albert J. Underkofler, 90, of Kimberton, retired operator of a kennel and dog grooming service, died in his sleep on Saturday morning.

Mr. Underkofler had spent the beginning of this year recovering from complications of treatment for back pain and suffered from congestive heart failure. He completed five months of rehabilitation at Parkhouse Provident Pointe and had relocated to Woodbridge Atria in Kimberton on the first of this month.

Mr. Underkofler was born and raised in Philadelphia, but lived in northern Chester County, Pennsylvania since 1957. He and his wife Eleanor operated Ronela Kennels, specializing in champion poodles. Together they provided a poodle grooming service for Delaware Valley and Main Line customers. Their work was often requested by celebrities such as Grace Kelly, Robert Q. Lewis, and Walter and Lenore Annenberg. They were frequent attendees of major dog shows during the early part of their business and frequently took top prizes. Eleanor passed away in 1999.

Mr. Underkofler was a 1937 graduate of Northeast High School and served in the cavalry and as a medical administration officer in the Army during World War II. He was an Episcopalian and member of the Church of the Epiphany in Royersford, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Underkofler is survived by a son, Allen of Kimberton; and two granddaughters: Christine Moyer of Tampa, Florida, and Rebecca Mullen of Spartanburg, South Carolina.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Epiphany, Third & Washington Sts., Royersford, on Saturday, June 13. Donations may be made to the church in lieu of flowers.
