Allen Scott Hess, 62, husband of Cheryl (Hoffman) Hess, of Fredericksville, passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 in Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest after a valiant battle of diabetes. Born on August 9, 1955 in Allentown, he was a son of the late Calvin C. "Fat" and Arlene (Weller) Hess.

Al was a 1974 graduate of Brandywine Heights High School. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Al served in the United States Army Motor Pool, stationed in Germany. Al left the Army with a great deal of pride for his country and a great deal of pride for all of the armed forces. While a member of the Topton American Legion early on Al organized and raised a great deal of money to benefit the “Brothers of 76” who are known for helping others in need.

Once Al started his family he was employed as a material damage appraiser for Erie Insurance Company, Bethlehem Branch and would have been employed for 30 years on December 7. Al was always doing his best to do his job with vigor and accuracy. Erie Insurance took good care of Al over the years and Al always made sure Erie took precedence during all of his work weeks. He never missed a day of work no matter what the medical circumstance he was enduring. He took pride in his work ethic and absolutely instilled that work ethic to his beloved children. He was also the owner of Hess’s Auto Body in the 80’s and Top of the Hill Butchering until his death where he was best known for his scrapple.

Al was a member of the Topton American Legion, Mertztown Rod and Gun Club, Pikeville Sportsman Club and the VFW in New Albany, Pennsylvania.

In addition to his loving wife and partner of 38 years, Al is survived by his daughter: Renae Ali (Hess) wife of Corey Bailey and the best “Big Al” to his favorite Kaitlyn Elizabeth Bailey; son: Allen Scott Hess, Jr. and his girlfriend, Kirstie (Kierstie); siblings: Calvin G., partner of Denise Boyer, Barry, partner of Tammy Flicker and Tina (Hess) wife of Troy Fairchild. He was preceded in death by his sister: Marilyn "Sus" (Hess) Steffy. Al had a slew of nieces and nephews who he was proud to call family.

Funeral services will be held privately at the cabin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Al's name to the Topton American Legion “Brothers of 76” or to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, www.stjude.org.
