The Rev. Arlene K. (Stofflet) Greenwald, age 72, wife of Brian D. Greenwald, of West Chester, Pennsylvania, passed away at home on Thursday, February 29, 2024. Arlene was born on April 6, 1951, in Pottstown, the daughter of the late Anna Elizabeth (Jacob) and Paul Newton Stofflet.

Arlene received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Hahnemann University. She had a special interest in group dynamics. She received a Master of Divinity degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (now United Lutheran Seminary) and was ordained in the Lutheran church. Her call to become a pastor came at the age of 13 years when she was teaching Sunday School.

Arlene was an Interim Pastor for over 40 years, serving 17 ELCA and United Church of Christ congregations in Southeast Pennsylvania. She enjoyed preaching from the aisle, using experiences from her own life and that of her husband and daughter in her sermons. As the interim pastor at St. Paul's, Lionville, she supported and embraced the vision to start a new ministry that provides a worship experience for those with intellectual/developmental challenges. This worship ministry, Rejoicing Spirits, has grown to be nationwide.

Growing up on a dairy farm, Arlene's love of animals continued throughout her life. She was especially fond of English Shepherds. She was a member of the English Shepherd Society and bred a litter of puppies which were born in July.

Arlene had many interests. She loved gardening and flowers, and along with her husband cultivated large flower and vegetable gardens. They were especially proud of the dahlias that were in beautiful bloom last year. She was an accomplished sewer and enjoyed sewing both her own clothing and that of her daughter when she was young. Arlene enjoyed quilting with family and friends, and she also collected quilts. When her daughter was growing up, Arlene volunteered in her school's library. She loved Disney and would take family trips to Florida almost every year. Arlene and her husband were foster parents of a young girl from Martin Luther Silver Springs School. They also hosted a foreign exchange student from South Korea.

Arlene loved and was great at hosting parties and gatherings, such as a holiday brunch or dinner for family and friends or a gathering of parishioners from an interim congregation. No matter what the event, she went all out.

Arlene had a deep, unfaltering faith in God's goodness throughout her life. Possessing a loving pastor's heart, Arlene touched the lives of many with her kindness, compassion, and sense of humor. Her grace and strength amidst her many health challenges were an inspiration to all who knew her. Arlene lived her faith as an instrument of God's love and healing in the world.

In addition to her loving husband, Arlene is survived by her daughter: Brianna E. Greenwald, fiancée of Paul Olmo; brother: Carl Stofflet; and nieces and nephews: Mark, Barbara, Angela, Kevin, Richard, and Todd. She was preceded in death by her brothers: Donald Stofflet, Barry Stofflet, and Clarence Mingle; and nephew: Matthew.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 355 St Johns Circle, Phoenixville. Officiating will be the Rev. K Russell Crouthamel. Interment will follow in the Christ Union Cemetery, 222 Niantic Road, Barto, PA at 3:00 PM. Friends and family will be received from 9:30 AM-10:45 AM at the Church.
