Charles Melvin Hampton Jr., age 95, husband of Mary Louise (Heemskerk) Hampton, of East Vincent, Pennsylvania, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2024 in his residence. Born on July 21, 1929, in Chester, he was a son of the late Minnie (Moyer) Ward and the late Charles Melvin Hampton Sr.

A 1947 graduate of Royersford High School, Melvin served in the United States Army, having been stationed in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, he began his career as a lineman with Bell Telephone. After attending night school and receiving his engineering degree from Ursinus College, he moved into engineering and spent the rest of his career as an equipment engineer.

Although a quiet man, Melvin showed his care and love in different ways. When the kids were growing up, he was known around their Royersford neighborhood for the treehouses, ziplines, and the electric go-kart that he built.

Melvin had several lifelong hobbies, including his passion for building and flying model airplanes. He was an avid skier, still conquering the slops until the age of 84. He had a lifelong love for camping, and for the last 58 years he enjoyed working and maintaining the family summer home on Promised Land Lake, where, as an avid woodworker, he built his own rowboat, sailboat, and iceboat. Melvin also enjoyed riding motorcycles and bought himself a scooter on his 85th birthday.

In addition to his loving wife, to whom Melvin would have been married to for 70 years this coming October, Melvin is survived by children: David, husband of Carolyn Hampton, Carolyn, wife of Richard Freed, and John, husband of Beth Hampton; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brother: Mark Ward. He was preceded in death by daughters: Diane and Charlotte Hampton; and sisters: Doris Good and Rae Grant.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 11:30 am, at the Cattermole-Klotzbach Funeral Home, 600 Washington Street, Royersford. Officiating will be the Rev. Chris McKinstry. Friends will be received from 10:30 AM-11:30 AM at the funeral home.
