Dean Edwin Burget, MD

Dean Edwin Burget, MD passed away on March 17, 2025, St. Patrick’s Day, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, following complications from a stroke.

Dean was born on June 29, 1936 to Dean E. Burget and Marie Alwine Burget, school teachers in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated valedictorian of his class at DeVilbiss High School in 1954. He attended Denison College and then attended and graduated from the University of Toledo. At Denison, he met Undine Ehrman of Butler, Pennsylvania, married in 1957 and had three children: Anna Undine [1957], Mark Andrew Ehrman [1961] and Kevin Phillips [1964].

Dean attended and graduated from Yale Medical School in 1962. He joined the Air Force and served at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio, achieving the rank of Captain and also served as a medical resident at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland Ohio.

Moving to the Philadelphia area, Dean continued his medical residency at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, and served at Hahnemann Hospital as Chief of Surgery. Affiliated with several local hospitals, he moved with his family farther out into rural Chester County, achieving Board Certification for the practice of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1972 and going into private practice. Moving to western Pennsylvania In 1979, he successfully started a new practice in Butler, PA while leading an effort to restore Undine’s family home, Elm Court, which he championed for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

After the end of his marriage in 1993, Dean met and married Gabriella Morocz in 1994, and with her help set up and ran a new medical practice with offices not far from their residence in Haverford PA. Ever committed to caring for others, he continued to practice medicine until the age of 84.

Dean was a man for all seasons. He had an insatiable curiosity coupled with a temperament to share his excitement with everyone he met. He loved poetry, literature, family genealogy and the study of American history. He was a self-taught oil painter who copied the masters, played folk harmonica and Irish tin whistle in local sessions in New York City and Philadelphia. Always seeking new challenges, he took up both skiing and horseback riding (and fox hunting) for the first time in his 40s. A gregarious host who put people at ease and made friends easily, he could be counted on to find the arch humor in any situation. He pushed his children to excel and yet was never boastful of his own achievements, including his life’s work as a doctor helping untold thousands of people. He prized scholarship and intellectual achievement, yet a smile was never far from his lips for humor and irreverence as an antidote to self-importance.

Dean was predeceased by his daughter Anna Undine Burget Peeples, his younger brother Gary C. Burget, MD and great-granddaughter Mia Fournier. He is survived by his wife Gabriella; his sister Anne-Louise Withey; his two sons, Mark and Kevin Burget; his grandchildren: Undine Peeples Fournier, Hilary Peeples Leger, Alyssa Peeples, Jasper and Spencer Burget, Sevi and Ivy Burget-Foster; and his great-grandchildren, Alexandre and Anna Undine Fournier, and Claire, Matthew and Valentin Leger. They hold his memory and his love for life closely in their hearts.
