Obituary

Edward M. Hogan, age 91, husband of the late Louise R. (Carbone) Hogan, of Spring City, formerly the Overbrook section of Philadelphia, passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2021 in Seasons Hospice. Born on April 15, 1930 and raised in the Swampoodle Neighborhood of North Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Elizabeth (Shea) and Michael Hogan.

With his parents' permission, Edward enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17, and served in post-World War II Germany and the Korean War. He served as Military Police in Berlin during the Berlin Airlift, where he helped guard high ranking Nazi war criminals in Spandau Prison. After serving nine years, he was honorably discharged having achieved the rank of Sergeant Major.

Edward later enjoyed eighteen years working construction as a plasterer, before employment at the Philadelphia Naval Yard in South Philadelphia, ending as supervisor of hazardous materials. He was last employed as a security guard at the Overbrook School for the Blind, where he was often the first person to greet staff and visitors entering the main building.

Edward had been a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #344, West Philadelphia, prior to its closing before joining Newtown Square Council #4129. Most importantly, he was interested in his family's activities, enjoyed talking to the boys about what they were involved up to and very proud of their accomplishments. His faith was very important to him, being very active with his church and forming friendship bonds as close as family.

Mr. Hogan is survived by his daughter: Patricia M., wife of William P. Mastrangelo, of Spring City, PA; two grandsons: Justin and Kyle Mastrangelo, both of Spring City; and many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Thomas Hogan, Jim Hogan, Marie Dunn and Jack Hogan.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral mass on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 10:30 am, at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, 3640 Schuylkill Road, Spring City. Officiating will be the Rev. Charles R. O'Hara. Interment will follow in the Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield. Friends will be received from 9:00 am - 10:15 am in the Church.
