Francis J. Barnes, PhD, 80, husband of Geri L. (Bauer) Barnes, of Linfield, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at his residence. Born in Wilmington DE, he was a son of the late Charles A. and Grace (McLaughlin) Barnes.
Dr. Barnes received his B.S. from Niagra University, his M.S. from Catholic University, and his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Notre Dame. He taught at the University of Notre Dame, was a research fellow at the University of Wisconsin, and served as chief environmental officer for the Commerce Department's Regional Economic Development Administration office. Most recently, Dr. Barnes enjoyed being a private consultant in New Jersey, New York, and Virginia, focusing on economic development. He was an avid golfer and loved Notre Dame Football.
In addition to his loving wife of 43 years, Dr. Barnes is survived by his daughter, Kathy, wife of Bryan Subbio, of Skippack; sons, Joe, husband of Denise Barnes, of Yardley and Matthew, husband of Heather Barnes, of Washington Crossing; brothers, Charles Barnes, of Pocomoke City, MD, Bill, husband of Dorothy Barnes, of New Castle, DE and Dick, husband of Cathy Barnes, of Fort Pierce, FL; sister-in-law, Bernice Barnes, of Wilmington, DE; and nine grandchildren, Devon, Julian, Brendan, Madisan, Luke, Bradford, Olivia, Morgan and Kaycen. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Fournier and Grace Byrne.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial Mass on Monday, March 25, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta R.C. Church, 25 Swamp Pike, Schwenksville, PA. Officiating will be the Rev. James P. Byrne, OSFS. Interment will follow in the St. Ann Cemetery, Phoenixville. Friends will be received from 9:00-10:45 a.m. at the Church.
