Francis X. "Mac" McElroy, age 86, beloved husband of Helen M. (Markus) McElroy, of Phoenixville, formerly of Norristown, died Wednesday afternoon, May 28th, 2008 at home.? Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was a son of the late Edward A., and Mary (Sheridan) McElroy.? Mr. McElroy was a graduate of the Norristown High School in 1939, he then attended the Norristown Night School and Hobart University in Geneva, NY.?
A Veteran, Mr. McElroy served for the U.S. Navy during World War II as a gunner's mate 1st class in the American, European and Asiatic Theaters.? He served on the LCS 83 in World War II, and on the USS Massey 776 in Korea.? Mr. McElroy received the following awards / medals; Navy Unity Citation, Occupation Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, U.S. Korean Medal, The Korean Presidential Citation, the Good Conduct Medal, and the U.N. Korean Medal.? He was a member of the St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Phoenixville.?
Mr. McElroy was a Senior Mechanical Designer for many years working at the F.L. Markels and Sons in Norristown, the Exxon Office Systems in Lionville, then the John R. Hollingsworth Company in Phoenixville.?
Mr. McElroy volunteered much of his time to Athletics in Phoenixville.? He was a coach for over 22 years at the Phoenixville Marion Youth Club where he touched, literally, hundreds of lives.? Many of his players looked up to him throughout their lives.? He also was a PIAA umpire and was the Recreations Director in Phoenixville for over 7 years.? He also an avid train collector.?
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Mr. McElroy is survived by two daughters; Karen A. Sechler, of Emmaus, PA, Kathleen M., wife of Karl Durante, of Allentown, two sons; Kevin E. McElroy, of Phoenixville, and Brian F. McElroy, of Elizabethtown, PA, four grandchildren; Colin Sechler, Keenan Sechler, Kennymac Durante, Konnor Durante.? Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at the St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, Main Street at Third Avenue, Phoenixville, PA on Monday morning, June 2nd, 2008 at 11:00AM.? Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.? Friends will be received from 10-11AM, Monday morning at the Church.? In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in his name to the St. Ann Church, 502 S.
