George E. Fryling

On Saturday, October 22nd the town of Pottstown and village of Cedarville lost George E. Fryling, a treasured friend, father, husband, and son. George was the son of Philadelphia firefighter George and stay-at-home mom Alice (Ziegler) Fryling and brother of the late Ken Fryling and Jane Tyas of Philadelphia. He was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church of Philadelphia and remained close to dear friends from Messiah and NorthEast High School throughout his life. He enjoyed serving in the U.S. Army being stationed in Fulda, Germany. He had a great respect for the armed services and their families. After his discharge from the army, George, a talented artist, attended the Tyler School of Art from which he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees. After graduation he had a long career teaching art for the Colonial School District where he met fellow teacher and future wife Gayle (Spohn) Fryling of Elverson. They were married in July of 1974 at Mt. Carmel Church. George loved his in-laws, and he immediately became son to "Squire" and Anne Spohn and brother to Gary and Jim Spohn. In 1977 they made Cedarville their home and became active members of Cedarville United Methodist Church. In 1982 they welcomed their son Grant Douglas Fryling into the world. George loved spending time with Grant from the minute he was born … from rocking him on his porch swing, supporting him by working on set design for his high school musicals, visiting him at Dickinson College, and remembering him each year at an annual picnic attended by a smattering of his close college friends and their families. George enjoyed biking, working on his G Scale Train layouts, playing cards, continuing to build musical sets after he retired, and traveling with those he loved. He also loved taking care of his 1969 Le Mans Pontiac, which he affectionately called "The Saint." George made an impression on everyone he met. If you knew him you were important to him.

George is survived by Gayle, his wife of 48 years; brothers-in-law Gary (Kathe) and Jim (Alison); his nieces Brooke, Stephanie, and Makenzie; his nephews Chris, Shayne, and Tyson; his bonus daughter Liv; and his cousin Sue.

Services will be held at Cedarville United Methodist Church (UMC) Saturday, October 29th with visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and a memorial service that will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in George's name to either: The Grant D. Fryling Memorial Prize at Dickinson College Office of College Advancement, PO Box 1773 Carlisle, PA 17013 or to Cedarville UMC at 1092 Laurelwood Road, Pottstown, PA 19465.
