George L. "Jeff" Major, 99, of Wall St. Spring City, husband of the late Ressie M. (Charlton) Major passed away at Manatawny Manor on Thursday, September 24, 2009.
Born in Spring City on December 9, 1909, he was the son of the late Walter P. and Harriet (Mattis) Major. He attended the former Spring City High School and was the only living member of his class. He was a Navy veteran, a retired electrician from Dana Corp., a member of the First United Methodist Church of Phoenixville and an amateur photographer.
Mr. Major was very active until recent years as a member of Royersford Lodge #585 F&AM, Spring-Ford High Twelve Club, Phoenixville Royal Arch Chapter 198, Spring City Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Forest #34, where he was a Past Grand Tall Cedar. George was a founding member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post 164, Royersford, PA. He also held the distinction of oldest living member of those organizations. Mr. Major was also a life member of Friendship, Humane and Liberty Fire Companies of Royersford and Spring City respectively.
He is survived by his daughter Patricia (Major) Hine wife of Clinton W. Hine; two step-grandchildren: Donald P. Hine and Laurie L. Smith and a step-grandson Nathaniel P. Hine. He was preceded in death by a second wife Elizabeth (Potter) Lessig Major and survived also by step-daughters Dorothy Lessig and Marie Karkoska.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 10:30 AM at Cattermole-Klotzbach Funeral Home, 600 Washington St. Royersford, PA. Calling time will be on Monday evening from 7-8:30 PM where a Masonic Service will be held at 8:15 PM. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery.
