George Edgar Mansur Jr., 89, passed peacefully on Saturday, April 20, in Bradenton, Florida.
Born in Phoenixville on August 28, 1929, he was the son of the late Laurine A. and George E. Mansur Sr. He graduated from Phoenixville High School in 1947 and Ursinus College in 1950, after which he attended Gettysburg and Temple Law.
George held executive positions in insurance, finance, marketing and consulting, including vice president of Continental National American Group in Chicago.
In 1980 he negotiated and paid for the art rights to the Summer Olympics in Moscow, commissioning Salvador Dali as the artist.
George felt each day was a blessing to be lived to the fullest. In the early 1980s he returned to Phoenixville where he made it his mission to give back to the community that raised him.
A member of Kiwanis for 19 years, he served on many committees and was a Board Member, Officer, Club President and Lt. Governor for District 22. George formulated the Children’s Plaza on Bridge Street. and served as coordinator for the Kiwanis Children’s Summer Program upon its completion.
One of George’s favorite memories was a Kiwanis memory. When he was 17, he placed third in the Key Club Oratorical International convention and contest in Georgia, with the topic of “Leadership Through Service.”
An active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, he was a founder of the Columbarium Committee to oversee design, construction and management of the church’s Columbarium.
Following 9/11, George became an advocate for the Abrahamic faiths to coexist and started an annual Interfaith Prayer Breakfast between religious leaders in the Philadelphia area.
Additionally, George formerly served on the board and Advisory Committee for Alianzas de Phoenixville, the board of the Firebird Theater and as a volunteer with People to People.
He was awarded the Citizen Recognition Award in 2007 by the Office of the Mayor, Champion of the Community in 2013 by the Phoenixville Community Health Foundation, the 2015 Ambassador Award by the Phoenixville Interservice Club and the 2019 Emma Valenteen Award of Compassion by the Phoenixville Area Social Concerns Committee.
George is survived by four daughters, Jennifer Mansur Schneller and husband Michael of Istanbul, Turkey, Beth Anne Mansur and husband Richard Heckler of Lawrence, Kansas, Charlotte Mansur and husband Eric Connors of Bradenton, Florida, and Melissa Cada and husband Mark of Hillsborough, North Carolina; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren and dear partner Peg Groening of Phoenixville.
He was preceded in death by wife Jean Elizabeth Eagle Mansur and sister Anna Mowrey.
A visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with the memorial following at 11 a.m. Luncheon will be served at 12:15.
