Joan Harris (McKelvey), a beacon of warmth and generosity, passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on Thursday September 7th, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones. Known for her radiant smile that could light up a room, Joan had a unique ability to make everyone feel special. Her presence was a source of comfort and joy, and she leaves behind a legacy of kindness and selflessness.


Joan's career spanned over three decades as a healthcare professional, where she wore many hats-from lab technician to lab manager, to a dedicated doctor's assistant. But her true calling was the art of giving, whether it was her time, her expertise, or her love. A lifelong knitter, Joan's passion for the craft took her to far-flung destinations such as Iceland in search of inspiration, and the perfect Icelandic yarn. She was an avid reader and a cherished member of two book clubs for many years. Her love for physical activity was evident in her role as an aerobics instructor at the Phoenixville YMCA and many years of playing tennis. Music was another of Joan's loves, and she could often be found humming a tune or attending a concert.


Travel was a significant chapter in Joan's life story. She spent idyllic summers with her family in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and cherished visits to her best friends around the country. Her adventurous spirit led her to explore the vibrant cultures of Mexico and Jamaica alongside her late husband, Rudolph Harris, whom she met on a fateful vacation in Bermuda in 1972. But perhaps the most treasured moments of her life were the Christmases spent with her family and grandchildren, Everett and Nathanial. A consummate gift-giver, Joan delighted in the joy her carefully chosen presents brought to their faces, asking for nothing in return but their happiness.


Joan is survived by her two sons, James "Jamie" Harris and Matthew D. Harris; daughters-in-laws Kelli Harris and Allison Harris, her grandchildren, Everett and Nathanial; her dear friend and companion, Bob DiGiacomo; and several nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Wilson Harris; her parents, Edna (Deacon) and Earl Stanley McKelvey; and her siblings, Judy (McCraken) and Mickey.


In a world where taking often overshadows giving, Joan was a beautiful exception. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.


Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service at Campbell-Ennis-Klotzbach Funeral Home, Inc, 610 Main Street, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at 5:00 PM. Friends will be received from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM and friends are welcome to give a memory or remembrance from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
