Joanne (Smith) Sunderland, 74, wife of the late Phillip S. Sunderland of Lower Pottsgrove, formerly of Phoenixville, PA, and The Villages, FL, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Phoenixville Hospital.

Born February 1, 1952, in Norristown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harriet (Hansell) Smith and Paul Smith Sr.

A tomboy growing up, Joanne excelled in athletics, especially softball and volleyball. She later became a licensed practical nurse and worked in various doctors' offices before serving as the lower school nurse at Schuylkill Elementary School until her retirement. No matter why a student came to her office, Joanne always took the time to show compassion and provide comfort and care.

Joanne had a strong faith and a deep love for Jesus that grew through her church community. She was a devoted country music fan who especially enjoyed Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. In her spare time, she loved golfing, cheering on the Phillies, snacking on extra dark burnt pretzels, and collecting anything involving bears. She treasured time spent at the beach in Ocean City, NJ, and later enjoyed the sunshine and friendships she found during retirement in The Villages.

Joanne was thankful to be part of a large and loving family. She especially cherished traveling the world with her husband, Phil. After his passing in 2022, those closest to her knew a part of her heart was already waiting for her in Heaven.

Nothing brought Joanne more joy than her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored. She was a loving mother and grandmother whose kindness, warmth, and generosity touched many lives. To some she was a trusted friend, to others a source of comfort and support, but to many she was a cornerstone in their lives.

Joanne is survived by her children, Mike (Missy) Love and Carrie (Mike Briggs) Love; her grandchildren, Mike Briggs Jr., Trey Love, and Phoenix Love; and her siblings and their families: Paul (Kathy) Smith, Nancy (the late Donald) Fort, Wendy (Rick) Fehr, and Ray (Shelly) Smith.

She is also survived by her stepchildren and their families: Debbie (Ed) Yarnell, Jim (Robyn) Sunderland, and John (Bethany) Sunderland.
