Obituary

John H. McDermott, age 85, husband of Priscilla F. (Rogers) McDermott, of Royersford, PA died early Tuesday morning, August 17, 2010 in the Phoenixville Hospital following emergency surgery. Born in South Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Ralph and Marie (Palmer) McDermott. Mr. McDermott attended Royersford High School until he was drafted. While serving for the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. McDermott was part of the “D Day” invasion on Omaha Beach. He received the EAME Service medal with four bronze stars, the Purple Heart medal, and various other medals. Following his injury in the War John insisted on returning to his company. He was able to join his company 2 days prior to “VE Day”. Mr. McDermott re-counted several of his memories of his service during the Royersford annual Memorial Day Parade that concluded in Fernwood Cemetery. Following the war, Mr. McDermott received his high school diploma. He worked for B.F. Goodrich for many years. He also worked part time as the manager for the B.F. Goodrich Federal Credit Union. Mr. McDermott also served on the School Board for the Spring-Ford Area School District. After his retirement Mr. McDermott worked as driver for the Wolfington Bus Company and as an assistant at the Cattermole - Klotzbach Funeral Home. He was a past master and current member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Royersford Lodge #585, and a member of the Grace Assembly of God Church in Spring City.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, Mr. McDermott is survived by two sons; Rev. Dr. Scott, husband of Dawn (Oberholtzer) McDermott, of Washington Crossing, PA, Timothy M., husband of Trudy (Denney) McDermott, of Humble, TX, five grandchildren, Rebecca (McDermott) Frost, Darcy Danson, Lauren McDermott, Sara McDermott, Michelle McDermott, one great-grandson; Pierce Nealy and several nieces and nephews. Mr. McDermott was predeceased by two sisters; Mary Walters, and Emma Valenteen.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at the Grace Assembly of God Church, 1271 West Bridge Street, Spring City, PA 19475 on Friday, August 20, 2010 at 10:00AM. Officiating will be the Rev. Jack A. Mason. Burial with military honors will be in the Limerick Garden of Memories. Friends will be received from 7:00-8:30PM Thursday evening at the Cattermole-Klotzbach Funeral Home, 600 Washington Street, Royersford, PA, or from 9:00-10:00AM Friday morning at the Church. The Masonic service will take place on Thursday evening at 8:30PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Grace Assembly of God Church at the above address.
