John D. Harper, lovingly known as “Johnny,” age 61, of Phoenixville, PA was called by the sweet voice of Jesus to depart from this life on Wednesday, February 19th, 2014. Johnny was surrounded by family at the home of his beloved sister, Carolyn Gary, where he departed peacefully, along with his loving caretakers, Edith Cuascut and Chasity Gary.

Johnny was born on April 2, 1952, in Phoenixville, PA to the late Durrell and Hattie Mae Harper, of Deveraux, GA. Johnny attended the Phoenixville Area School District. He accepted the Lord Jesus as his personal savior at the age of 12. He was baptized by the late Rev. Harvey Shivers at Bethel Baptist Church on Penn and South Streets. Johnny loved praising the Lord. He especially loved singing along with the church choirs.

Johnny loved to socialize with family and friends, and he always had a kind word to share. He was always willing to help those in need. Johnny loved sports. He was passionate about baseball and flag football. He was a valuable member of Harper’s Softball Team and Knob Hill. Johnny was known for being a sharp dresser. He had a style all his own. He always looked good from head to toe. There was always a special place in his heart for the love of his brothers and sisters as they meant the world to him.

God had a purpose for Johnny’s life. God charged Johnny to love his fellow man, and he did just that. Johnny touched many throughout his life. He will be deeply missed throughout our community. We love you Johnny, you will always have a special place in our hearts. Lovingly, the Harper Family.

Johnny was preceded in death by one sibling, his eldest brother, Phillip Durrell Harper, Jr. He is survived by his eldest sister, Eleanor Harper and her companion, Richard “Junior” Perry, his eldest living brother, Albert Harper and his wife Rhonda Harper, his sister, Edith Cuascut and her late husband Francisco Cuascut, Jr., his sister, Madelyn Harper, his sister, Carolyn Gary and her late husband Anthony Gary, his sister, Doris Jones and her husband Howard Jones, his youngest sister, Sherry Harper-Jeter and her husband Anthony Jeter, and his youngest brother, Michael Harper.

He is loved by a host of 20 nieces and nephews, 16 great nieces and nephews, 1 great-great niece and 2 great-great nephews.

Also sharing special memories are several beloved friends including Neal Saunders, Hershey Johnson, Arthur Blakley, Scooter, a very special soul mate, Genotra Cornish, Jackie Thomas, Johnny (Mack) Brown, Ira Solomon, his buddy the Shave Cropper and Juanita Johnson, Joe Mandruziak, Rex Sutton, Walt, Pat Koke, the late Tommy Freeman and Joey Tommarro, and a host of friends and relatives.


Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 11 am, at Bethel Baptist Church, 412 Fairview Street, Phoenixville, PA. Friends may call from 9-11 am. Officiating will be the Rev. Nathan Coleman.
