Obituary

John V. Matthews Sr., age 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2023 surrounded by his wife and family in the Manatawny Manor. He was born January 20, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Charles H. and Mary D. (Sweeney) Matthews. He was the beloved husband of 68 years to Marcella A. (nee Fleming) Matthews, and a loving father to his children, John Matthews, Suzanne (Jeff) Adams, James Matthews, and Ann Marie Matthews. He was preceded in death by a young son, Daniel T. Matthews.

He also leaves behind to cherish his memory his grandchildren, Shannon (Michael) Stahl, Ciara Adams, Kevin Lytle, and Katie Cohrac; as well as his great-grandchildren, Dominic Lytle and Brigit Stahl. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Charlotte Matthews and Jeffrey Adams.

Dear brother of Joseph, Kathleen Zielenbach, Francis, and the late Thomas, Mary Titlow, Charles, James, Eugene, Robert, Margaret Touey, Edward, and William.

John worked as a pressman for National Publishing Company in Philadelphia for 47 years. He attended two years at LaSalle University for business, and he also did Income Tax preparation with his wife as his secretary, which he continued long after retiring in 1997.

A Korean War veteran, he honorably served in the United States Army. John enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, bingo, and shooting pool with his friends of the Willow Run community. He was a devoted member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Church.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral mass at St. Teresa of Calcutta, 256 Swamp Pike, Schwenksville, PA on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Officiating will be Rev. Paul Brandt. Burial will follow in the Limerick Garden of Memories. Friends will be received from 9:30 AM - 10:45 AM in the church on Thursday morning. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the St. Teresa of Calcutta Church at the address above.
