Marian T. Mercer, 97, wife of the late Chester L. Mercer, of Sanatoga, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2016 in Seasons Hospice, Phoenixville. Born on April 15, 1918 in Pulaski, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late James and Edna (Hogue) Thompson.

Marian received her Bachelor's Degree in public school music from Westminster College. She taught instrumental and voice in schools in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania and Bay City, Michigan, prior to her marriage. Her specialty was choral directing. She also taught at the Valley Forge Christian Academy. After her retirement from teaching, she was employed by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in King of Prussia.

Marian was an excellent cook and taught some gourmet cuisine classes for adult education programs. She had an interest in reupholstering furniture and her more recent hobby was hardanger, a type of intricate lacework. Most recently she helped in the directing of the SRC Singers, at Sanatoga Ridge Community, where she was the performance director. She was active in The First Presbyterian Church of Phoenixville over the years.

She was an inveterate card and board game player. Marian loved learning new games and most recently learned a new one at Christmas time. She always found a card or game club wherever she lived. She was also involved in a book club at Sanatoga Ridge Community.

Marian had been an accomplished seamstress. She was one of the last who translated her origins of growing up on a dairy farm into today's times. She still canned food and made the best apple pie.

Mrs. Mercer is survived by daughter: Janis L., wife of Dr. Raymond E. Dagger, of Mt. Airy, Maryland; sons: Dr. David R. Mercer of Cedar Falls, Iowa and James B., husband of Linda Mercer, of Simpsonville, South Carolina; sister-in-law: Nancy, wife of Robert Burig, of New Wilmington, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren; and two step grandchildren. Mrs. Mercer was preceded in death by her sisters: Dorothy Ligo and Frances Wallace.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 3:30 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Phoenixville, 145 Main Street, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Officiating will be the Rev. Douglas N. Hagler.
