Obituary

On Wednesday, October 12, 2011, Maritsa Scoulos passed at 87 years young! Beloved wife of the late Michael J Scoulos; survived by daughters Zoe, Despina, Joanne, and Louisa; grandmother of Alexander, Maria, Andrea, Angelo, Maritsa, Henry V, Stathis, Constantina, Nicholas, and Ella. Known as a strong willed and compassionate mother to all, Maritsa Scoulos passed away, surrounded by family. Born in Karpathos, Greece in 1923, she endured hardship and austerity, though her courage could not be broken. Once an immigrant in the United States at the age of 24, she attached herself to the Karpathian community of Pittsburgh, took on leadership roles at K.E.T. and K.E.P.A., and devoted her life to encourage love, companionship, and remembrances through the generations. She met her loving husband, Michael J Scoulos and they were soon married. Life was difficult, but being Greek, they did what Greeks do best. They fed Pittsburgh, opening restaurants and bringing friends and family together to talk about events and think about home. A mother, a protector, and a leader, she represented an era. She will be missed. Friends will be received on Friday, October 14, at St. George's Greek Orthodox Chapel in the Holy Trinity Cemetery at 8941 Ringeisen Road, Allison Park, McCandles Township, PA 15101. The closed casket viewing will be from 2:00-2:30pm. The Trisagion Service, at 2:30-3:30pm, will be followed by the burial and the Makaria location will be announced at that time. Remembrances may be made in the name of the late Maritsa Scoulos to K.E.T. of K.E.P.A. c/o Joanne Scoulos, 337 Sunset Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15228.
