Marvin E. Simmons, age 81, husband of Nancy J. (McGown) Simmons, of West Chester, PA passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2013 in his residence. Born in Lindsay, OK, he was a son of the late Levi and Rettie (Avara) Simmons.
Mr. Simmons served as a Military Policeman in the United States Army at the Valley Forge Army Hospital. He was a member of the Phoenix Lodge F. & A.M. #75, and was a life member of the Phoenix Hose, Hook, and Ladder Co. No. 1. He worked for and retired from B.F. Goodrich in Oaks as an assembler, then worked as a code inspector for Spotts, Stevens, and McCoy, Inc. in West Whiteland Township. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a kind soul who loved to help others.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Simmons is survived by two daughters, Margaret F., wife of Robert Hopta of Phoenixville and Sherry J., wife of Leonard Shirk of Exton; one brother, Jolly G. Simmons of Rancho Cordova, CA; four grandchildren, Thomas E., husband of Elizabeth Hopta, Megan M., wife of Joshua Eckenrode, Kristin K. Shirk, and Candace R. Shirk; four great grandchildren, Natalie and Lillian Hopta and Emily and Elijah Eckenrode; and his brother-in-law, Joseph H., husband of Betty McGown. He was preceded in death by one brother, Wiley Simmons, and one sister, Virginia Chenault.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at the First United Methodist Church of Phoenixville, 865 Main Street, Phoenixville, PA on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Officiating will be the Rev. Mark Young. Friends will be received at the church from 10:00-10:45 AM. A Masonic service will be held at 10:45 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made in his name to the Chester County SPCA, 1212 Phoenixville Pike, West Chester, PA 19380. Arrangements are being handled by the Campbell-Ennis-Klotzbach Funeral Home, Inc., Main Street at Fifth Avenue, Phoenixville.
