Obituary

Mary E. Christou, age 90, wife of the late Nicholas J. Christou, Sr., currently of Phoenixville, PA and formerly of Norfolk, VA, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2022. Born on September 29, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Catherine O'Donnell.

Mrs. Christou was a graduate of Holy Child Academy in Sharon Hill, PA. She began her career working at GE, where she eventually met her husband and married at age 19. For the next 30 years, Mrs. Christou focused on her family and her home before once again taking employment in Flourtown, PA at an oral surgeon's office. It was after her husband's passing in 1983 that she moved to Norfolk, VA, to be nearer to family and the chesapeake bay.

A lifelong devout and faithful Catholic, in her earlier years, Mrs. Christou was a member of the Epiphany of our Lord Catholic Church in Plymouth Meeting, PA, and St. Roses's Catholic Church while living in North Wales, PA. Once she moved to Norfolk, she became an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and she volunteered her time at the DePaul Hospital in Norfolk.

Mrs. Christou enjoyed spending time with her family, and was proud that her son served in the Navy and her grandson serves as a Master Sergeant and an Army medic. She was an avid reader, knitter, and pianist. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling, having had the opportunity to travel the world as part of a choral singing group, visiting destinations throughout the US, Europe and Australia.

Mrs. Christou is survived by three children, Charlotte, wife of Terry McClintic of Lewistown, PA, Denise, wife of Doug MacLeod of Phoenixville, PA, and Greg, husband of Janice Christou of Upper Black Eddy, PA; her loving daughter-in-law who cared for her for more than 30 years, Louise Christou of Norfolk, VA; four grandchildren, Alan, husband of Missy Showalter, Heather, wife of Calvin Vanderpool, Nicholas Christou, IV, and Dereck Christou; five great-grandchildren, Alex and Ari Vanderpool and Kara, Kaleb, and Quin Christou; and two siblings, Sr. Margaret O'Donnell and Charles, husband of Louise O'Donnell. Mrs. Christou was preceded in death by one son, Nicholas J. Christou, Jr.
