Melvin Alonzo Hampton Jr., “Pudgey,” passed away on June 17, 2015. He was born March 29, 1989 in Phoenixville Hospital to Melvin Hampton Sr. and Barbara Hamilton. His father is a descendant of the Rhodes and Hampton Family of Sparta, GA and his mother is a descendant of the Sutton Family of Phoenixville, PA.

Melvin adopted the nickname “Pudgey” from his grandmom. Gloria Johnson. He attended Barkley Elementary school in Phoenixville, attended Northern Chester County Technical School (CAT-Pickering) in Phoenixville, and eventually graduated from the Pottstown School District.

Melvin was born with heart disease and lived 26 years without ever complaining or feeling self-pity. He was full of life to everyone he came across. He loved his family dearly. He would always make jokes and loved to see others happy as well.

His most common phrase he would say was, “I have the last name of a Hampton and the blood of a Sutton. I have the best of both worlds.” Then he would give his pudgey smile.

He attended New Beginnings Church of God in Phoenixville as a child, where his father was an active member.

Melvin worked several jobs during his short time here. He worked for Burger King, several temp agencies and most recently at the Timberland Outlet. He sometimes worked on weekends to earn extra money at Delaware Valley Paving, where his father worked.

Melvin loved music and traveling to Georgia where he enjoyed the laid back country. He had future plans of moving to Georgia where he had a job waiting working in his cousin’s country store.

Melvin is survived by his mother, Barbara Harris, wife of Jerry Harris; father, Melvin A. Hampton Sr., husband of Lisa Viola; three brothers, Monroe R. Hampton, Matthew S. Hampton, and Dylan M. Hampton; five sisters, Nika Love, Jasmine M. Hampton, Mariah L. Hampton, McKayla K. Hampton, and Jailyn E. Hampton; nephew, Andrew M. Henry; two nieces, Zariya Banks and Zayla Banks; maternal grandmother, Gloria Johnson; paternal grandmother, Thelma L. Owens, wife of Thomas Owens; aunts and uncles, Sheila Hampton, Bernard Hampton, Jimmy Rhodes, Julia Scales, Kathy James, Gloria Reed, George Hamilton, Terry Hamilton (Godmother), Ervin Hamilton, and Barbara Moffatt; a host of cousins; Godfather, Tyrone Hampton; and girlfriend, Damaris Diaz.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Sunday, June 21, 2015, at 3:00 pm at Bethel Baptist Church, 412 Fairview Street, Phoenixville, PA. The viewing will be from 1:00-3:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made in Melvin’s name to the American Heart Association, P.O Box 15120, Chicago, IL 60693.
