Patricia Hogga Toth (December 2, 1945-August 29, 2026)

Patricia Hogga Toth, at the age of 80 years old, entered into eternal rest on the beautiful, sunny Summer morning of August 29, 2026 at her home. Her daughters, Susie and Julie, were singing beside her as she passed to the next life.

Pat was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Misericordia Hospital to Stephen J. and Julia V. (née Purcell) Hogga on December 2, 1945. Pat's parents brought her home to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania where she spent her entire childhood and the majority of her adult life.

As a child, Pat was known for organizing the kids on Rossiter Avenue into games of Cowboys and Indians, running through the blueberry patch at the end of the street, climbing onto the roof of the shed in the backyard, and playing airplane as she rode her bike. She was her own person from a very young age, and was told later in life by a close friend that he had "never met anyone like her." Inspired by the Cherry Ames book series (with Cherry Ames: Flight Nurse being her favorite), and an innate desire to always help others, she knew she wanted to be a nurse from a very young age. She attended Saint Ann's School, Phoenixville, where her innate love of people and interest in everyone and everything resulted in a few reports home that she needed to learn how to stop turning around during class to talk to her classmates. Pat graduated from Saint Ann's in 1959 and continued with high school at Saint Pius X, Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where she graduated in 1963.

While in high school, Pat saw a brochure from the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul showing a sister on a ship. This, along with Pat's love of adventure and deeply held beliefs that one should always give back and always leave everywhere and everyone a little better than you found it, led her to enter the Daughters, whose mission is to serve those who live in poverty, upon graduation.

As a Daughter of Charity, she attended Saint Joseph's College, Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she earned her Bachelor's of Science with a major in Nursing in 1969. Her work as a Daughter and a nurse took her to Washington, DC, Troy, New York, and Boston. As she always recounted, she "met so many talented and such good people" during her time as a Daughter, meeting lifelong friends, including those in her "Band Book Club", and Vincentians.

After nine years, Pat left the Daughters and returned home to Phoenixville. Upon returning, Pat met David Toth while attending Mass at St. Ann's. Dave later would admit that he had liked her since the time that they both went to St. Pius together, even though Pat had no idea who he was in high school. They married in 1977 and later had the joys of their life together - their two daughters.

Pat was a nurse for 53 years, working at various health organizations in the Delaware Valley, in diverse roles and specialties. When asked what her favorite was, she would say homecare because she liked "teaching the family how to care for their loved ones." She never lost her commitment to those living in poverty and worked at the Face-to-Face Health Clinic at Saint Vincent's in Germantown on the weekends when she was able.

Pat loved singing and regularly regaled her children with songs she created or the classics of Peter, Paul and Mary, and John Denver, and dancing whenever she could. She exposed her children to theater, the arts, politics, and everything the world has to offer. She put great effort into being a mom and was only ever concerned that her children "be good people," rather than what they did or did not do. Pat cultivated the interests of her children and always seemed to know what her children needed before they did. Pat also enjoyed sharing her Hungarian and Irish roots, making filled cabbage and recounting family stories and history. She was a firm believer in humanity and stood by the saying "where there's life, there's hope." She would regularly connect with strangers in checkout lines, French bistros, and medical offices. She found beauty in everyone and everything.

After retirement, Pat enjoyed talking long distance with her close friend Mary Ruth Smith; reconnecting with her friends and meeting new ones; visits with her beloved cousin, Mary Elizabeth Ashwell, and childhood friends who became like sisters - "the Stevenson sisters"; helping her daughters with their homes; walking her beloved dog; and gardening. She continued to want to explore the world and even obtained her Irish citizenship at the age of 79. Her love for life and for her children was evident to everyone who had the luck to meet her.

Pat was up for anything and always along for the ride, whether that be on errands with her children or on trips to Europe. Pat was a joyful, fun, spirited, open-hearted, kind and generous person. Her zeal for life was anchored by a deep faith and commitment to the betterment of the world.

Pat's family would like to thank the University of Pennsylvania Abramson Cancer Center and Penn Medicine HomeCare and Hospice, and all of her community that supported her and her family over the past year.

In addition to her husband of 48 years, David, and her parents, Pat was predeceased by her older brother Stephen, who died shortly after his birth in September 1939. In addition to her daughters, she is survived by many cousins and friends, who will miss her deeply.

Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Friday, September 4, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 5, 2026, 9:00 a.m. - 10:15 am at Campbell-Ennis-Klotzbach Funeral Home (610 Main Street, Phoenixville, PA 19460). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church (502 S. Main Street, Phoenixville, PA 19460) with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery immediately following.
