Obituary

Robert Wellace Lusch, age 92, of Phoenixville PA, husband of the late Marie Lorraine Lusch (nee Kennelly), passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at his home. Born in Summit Hill, PA he was the son of Edith M. (Carbis) and Frederick S. Lusch.

Robert graduated from Lansford High School, in Lansford PA, Class of 1949. He later enlisted in the United States Navy and served from July 26, 1949 until his Honorable Discharge on April 14, 1953. Robert served during the Korean War and he attained the rank of Aerographer's Mate Third Class (Weather Observer). He attended basic training boot camp at the US Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois. He also attended various Naval Training Schools located in: Memphis, Tennessee, Lakehurst, New Jersey and Norfolk, Virginia. Robert served sea-duty on the USS Oriskany (CV-34), USS San Pablo (AGS-30) and the USS Mount Olympus (AGC-8). During his time at sea, he was deployed to Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, the Mediterranean, and Northern Africa. Robert joined the Navy and he really did see the world!

On February 6, 1954, Robert married the girl next door, Marie Lorraine Kennelly. They had one daughter, Dianne Marie. From 1954 to 1976 he was employed at Phoenix Steel. He took on jobs in all facets of steel production from primarily working in the Roll Shop, to Crane Operator, to working in the Chemistry Lab. Robert also worked at the Montgomery County Home and Rehabilitation Center in the Maintenance Department, as well as a transport driver. He also drove a School Bus. Robert was a very hard worker throughout his life and took odd jobs as necessary to provide for his family.

Robert is survived by his daughter Dianne Lusch Houghtaling, wife of Mark Houghtaling from Lansdale, PA, his brother Richard Howard Lusch, husband of Sandra from Phoenixville, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert is preceded in death by his wife Marie Lorraine Lusch and his siblings Elizabeth Lusch, Gloria Lack and LaMarr Lusch, as well as Joan Miller, his companion for 20 years.

Robert was a perfectionist. He loved dogs and was an avid reader. He enjoyed woodworking, playing chess, model railroading, photography, and aircraft of all kinds. He kept up with current events and had interest in the weather and electronics, stemming from his time in the US Navy. He enjoyed traveling and cruising, loved driving, and had a great memory. He became computer literate at a very advanced age. He was a sponge for information of any kind. He absorbed it, and was able to accurately recall (and dispense!) amazing pieces of information. He really did know something about everything.

Everyone called him Bob and if you met him once, you'd never forget him. He was intelligent, quick-witted, and well-spoken and had a great sense of humor. He is deeply missed by his family and friends.
