Ruth Spieth Custer
January 28, 1926 - September 30, 2024
Ruth "Daisy" Spieth Custer, age 98, widow of Elmer K Custer, Jr of Oaks, PA, passed away peacefully in SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. Born in Royersford on the Spieth farm, she was the daughter of William and Adelaide (Holz) Spieth
She was a life-long member of St John's Evangelical Church of Phoenixville being baptized and confirmed there. She was a Sunday School teacher for 21 years, taught in Bible School for several years, a prayer partner for four of her grandchildren, and assisted with other administrative tasks for Worship services. She attended Garwood School for a short time and then Upper Providence Consolidated School through 5th grade. After moving to Longford Rd, she attended 6th grade at Oaks School and Mont Clare School for 7th and 8th grade. She and Elmer both attended Junior and Senior High in Phoenixville and graduated in 1944. She was employed by BF Goodrich as a shipping clerk and in 1949 she and Elmer were married at St. John's.
She liked sports, bike riding, ice and roller skating, swimming and playing baseball. Daisy enjoyed gardening at the home that she and Elmer had built. She also enjoyed crafting, baking, exploring and recording both Elmer and her family's histories. She created scrapbooks using memorabilia such as newspaper articles, photos, programs and other mementos for family and friends. Her family, friends and neighbors were the center of her life, and she shared her talents and goodies with many.
"Daisy" was predeceased by her husband Elmer of 61 years and youngest daughter Bonnie Jane Henderson (2019). She is survived by two daughters Carol, wife of Charles Cully Bolivia, NC and Cindy, wife of Paul Gadzicki, North Coventry, PA and son-in-law Brian Henderson Greensboro, NC. She has six grandchildren Christopher Cully, husband of Shanna (McDermott), Amanda Greninger wife of Samuel, Rachel wife of Dr. Michael Kelly, "PJ" and Madison Gadzicki, and Carlee Henderson. She also has five great grandchildren Charlie and Lucy Cully, Cecilia and Serena Greninger and Antoinette "Nettie" Kelly. She is also survived by twin sisters June Henzie and Joan Carl and predeceased by three brothers Howard Fremmerlid, William and George Spieth and sister Helen Manney.
Relatives and friends will be received at St. John's Lutheran Church 355 St. John's Circle, Phoenixville, PA on Friday, October 25th from 10 - 10:45 AM and are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service at 11 AM. Burial will be private at convenience of family in the St Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Oaks, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Ruth's (Daisy) name to St John's Memorial Wreath Fund, Holisticare Hospice of Wayne, PA (holisticarehospice.org) or SECU Hospice House of Brunswick (lifecare.org).
