Shirley L. (Smith) Stafford, age 85, wife of Maj. Raymond R. Stafford (Ret.), of Douglassville, PA passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 in the York Hospital. Born in Gouverneur, NY, she was a daughter of the late Robert W. and Dorothy M. (Kinsley) Smith.
Mrs. Stafford was a graduate of the St. Luke's Nursing School in Bethlehem, PA. She served in the United States Army Nurse Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant, stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas during the Korean War. She retired from Phoenixville Hospital as a registered nurse in the operating room after 20 years. Mrs. Stafford was a member of the Lady Lake United Methodist Church in Lady Lake, FL, where she sang in the choir and volunteered in a food bank, The Upper Room and Christian outreach, Love, Inc. She was a participant in a Harvard Medical School Research Study for the past 62 years, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Schuylkill Chapter in Pottstown as well as a charter member of Women in Military Service for America. She enjoyed needlepoint and painting.
In addition to her husband of 62 years, Mrs. Stafford is survived by three daughters, Dotty S., wife of Tom Manney of Phoenixville, Cathy S., wife of David Wright of Pottstown, and Betty S., wife of James Clarke of Gilbertsville; two sons, Bob, husband of Jan Stafford of Pensacola, FL and Leonard H., husband of Cindy Stafford of McHenry, MS; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four siblings, Glenn, Roberta, Leonard, and Benjamin Smith.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service and Eastern Star service at the Campbell-Ennis-Klotzbach Funeral Home, Inc., Main Street at Fifth Avenue, Phoenixville, PA on Monday, November 17, 2014 at 11:00 AM. Officiating will be Shirley's grandson, Pastor Matt Manney of the Greater Philadelphia Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Valley Forge Memorial Gardens. Friends will be received at the funeral home Monday from 10:00-11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Cedarville United Methodist Church, 1092 Laurelwood Road, Pottstown, PA 19465.
