Stanley B. Miller, 70, of Phoenixiville and Naples, ME, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at his home. He was the husband of Lori (Wickham) Miller and the late Linda Lee (Mueller) Miller.
Stan was born in Chicago to the late Harold and Vivian Miller. In 1965, He graduated with honors from Denison University with a degree in history. He then attended the University of Chicago, Graduate School of Business where he earned his MBA, while also working at American National Bank and Trust Co. as a management trainee.
In 1968, Stan was commissioned as Ensign in the United States Navy, after attending Officers Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He was stationed at the Pentagon, where he was assigned to the Chief of Naval Operations Budget Office.
Following the Navy, Stan returned to banking as a loan officer for the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. in Washington D.C. before heading to Wall Street in 1971 to work for White Weld, where he learned about the investment industry in his role as institutional salesman, servicing major accounts across the country. Stan returned to Chicago with White Weld, then Loeb Rhodes, and then back to Wall Street with Paine Webber in 1975 before forming his own investment advisory firm in 1978, Optivest Capital Management of White Plaines, NY. During this time, Stan shared his knowledge and experiences at the University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, CT., as adjunct professor teaching economics and finance for six years.
Stan was intrigued and energized by the use of options for portfolio management and in 1983 formed a new investment firm, Euro-American Capital Fund, L.P., with membership on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. Stan spent the next 10 years trading in the crowd on the floor of the PHLX, an exhilarating and challenging period.
He left the floor in 1994 to trade his own portfolio and to live life to the fullest: spending time with his sons – and later his grandchildren, coaching soccer, playing the piano, pursuing his love of skiing and his daily running and workouts, all the while remaining abreast in real time of world affairs and all that shaped the financial markets
A central part of Stan’s life since 1990 has been the family lakeside retreat in Maine where his he, his wife, sons, grandchildren and extended family have spent much time together, and where Stan has built lasting friendships based on a shared love of life’s simplest joys: family, community, music, water, mountains and the general splendor of nature.
In addition to his wife, Stan is survived by two sons: Reid Miller and wife Debra, of Collegeville, and Ted Miller of Phoenixville; grandchildren: Ryan, Siena and Derek; brother, Robert Miller and wife Martena, of Cave Creek, AZ and sister, Karen Brady and husband Robert, of Lake Wales, Florida.
A celebration of Stan’s life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Beaver Farm, 551 West Seven Stars Road, Phoenixville, PA  19460. Visitation will begin at 10 AM, the ceremony at 11:00 AM and a reception will follow. Please omit flowers.
